Bruce Springsteen appeared on the cover of Time and Newsweek in the same week in October of 1975. These magazines are part of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection.

Monmouth University in West Long Branch  will become the new home of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection on Nov. 1.

The collection, which had been housed at the Asbury Park Public Library, is the most extensive of its kind. It is comprised of books, concert programs, magazine and newspaper articles and various other printed ephemera dedicated to the careers of Springsteen and members of his bands.

The collection has been used by authors, writers, researchers and fans who look for more information and details on Springsteen’s career.

The collection contains nearly 14,900 documents from 44 countries. As it grew, the collection exceeded the Asbury Park Public Library’s storage capacity.

Relocation of the Springsteen Collection to Monmouth University culminates a four-year search for a site in New Jersey that combines the right of public access with proper environmental controls, security, and an opportunity to expand the Collection.

Chris Phillips, editor and publisher of Backstreets Magazine is the president of The Friends of the Bruce Springsteen Special Collection.

“The partnership between Monmouth University and the fan community offers a great opportunity to ensure the preservation of Springsteen-related history at one place,” said Phillips.  “At the University, the Collection will be publicly accessible to all who have a serious interest in Bruce Springsteen’s life and career.”

“The Collection not only offers Springsteen fans the chance to explore various aspects of his career, but students, scholars, and journalists will also benefit from the access that Monmouth University will now provide,” said Robert Santelli, executive director of the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles and Monmouth alumnus who helped secure the collection for the University.  “The additional space at Monmouth allows for the Collection to grow and in the future include recordings, oral histories, film footage, and other documents.”

“Monmouth University is the perfect location for this outstanding Collection,” said school president  Paul G. Gaffney II. “Students and faculty from Monmouth University, especially our music industry students, will benefit greatly from having access to these documents. I hope it will also serve as a valuable resource
for members of the academic community from around the world.

The Bruce Springsteen Special Collection is available to view by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

E STREET BAND: A HALL FINALLY COMES KNOCKING

E STREET BAND: A HALL FINALLY COMES KNOCKING

10/13/2011

When Bruce Springsteen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, it was without his E Street Band. But the group may finally get its due — they’ve become the first group ever nominated for induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.

Also among the 50 nominees announced today are actors Alan Alda, Christopher Reeve and Michael Douglas, and fellow music acts Celia Cruz, Connie Francis, Dionne Warwick, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughn.

Unlike the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whose inductees are chosen by members of the music industry, voting for the New Jersey Hall of Fame is open to the public at NJHallofFame.org.

Springsteen, who was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2008, feels the E Street Band should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the time of his induction he said, “I think the Hall of Fame needs to come up with a mechanism that somehow honors musicians.” The following year the Hall added the Sidemen category to their induction ceremony, although not every year since has someone been recognized in that category
